Biography
Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson is a Helsinki-based Icelandic guitarist, composer, and producer whose work moves fluidly between jazz, contemporary music, and free improvisation. With nearly two decades devoted to forging a distinctive musical voice, his fearless approach to both composition and performance continues to challenge and inspire audiences.
He holds a Nordic Master’s in Jazz Performance from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, with extended studies at the Sibelius Academy under the mentorship of Raoul Björkenheim and Teemu Viinikainen.
Since relocating to Finland in 2011, Sigurdur has become an active presence in both the local and international music scenes. He co-founded the electric guitar ensemble Sähkökitarakvartetti, which has released four albums and performed at festivals such as Musica Nova and Tampere Biennale. His work with Equally Stupid—now joined by American drummer Sam Ospovat—continues to evolve, alongside his ongoing collaboration with Lúna and Finnish artists including Aili Järvelä, Talambo, Sid Hille & Foreign Friends, and Anni Elif's Edith.
An established recording artist and producer, Sigurdur has released over ten albums of original compositions and has performed across Nordic and European festivals since 2005. His talents extend to film scoring, notably the feature Punainen Kohina (2021), where his music explores the dynamic interplay between sound and image.
Whether through intricate compositions or spontaneous improvisation, Sigurdur remains committed to pushing musical boundaries—and inviting listeners into bold, expressive sonic worlds.
